There are few more respected people in the Hawke’s Bay wine industry than Kate Radburnd. Her long tenure running Pask and numerous governance and judging roles within the industry have created a legacy that she should be extremely proud of. Now her days are spent on Radburnd Cellars - a no expense spared attempt to make the very best wines of her career and this, her second release under this eponymous label, is an elegant, refined take on modern Hawke's Bay Syrah.
This is tightly woven wine with very attractive, floral aromatics in the feminine form and a palate that brings layers of dark red fruits with hints of anise / spice. Lovers of fine Hawke's Bay Syrah will immediately recognise the underlying power this wine shows in its youth, and the silken tannin structure and incredibly long finish promises much for those with the patience to lay some down. It has clearly been made to age gracefully and we would love to revisit this 2018 release in 5 years time when it has fully blossomed and unveiled its secrets.
We would advise decanting if opening a bottle in the next 2-3 years to bring out the detail on the palate.
Tasting Notes
The winery writes "An elegant Syrah which combines both exotic and red fruits supported by a backbone of fine tannins. Pure fruited and fragrant, with blueberry and cardamon spice. This Syrah has lingering length and persistence of flavour, a hallmark of this variety."
Joelle Thomson writes "It took 34 years for winemaker Kate Radburnd to create her dream wine brand, Radburnd Cellars, and this Syrah is one of her first two releases. The wines are made in the old Wishart building in Bay View, north of Napier. She leases this facility to make small quantities of high quality wines with a firm eye on top shelf wines from Hawke's Bay. Radburnd was formerly at C J Pask Wines for 26 years where Chardonnay and Syrah were among the best wines she made. This new 2018 Radburnd Syrah is a spicy, earthy, medium-bodied wine with great elegance and makes a lovely new addition to wines made from Hawke's Bay's most interesting red grape."
