FREIGHT FREE ON 36 BOTTLE BUYS
We loved this new release. Yes, this is a 2019 but Margrain tend to hold their Sauvignons back a while before release - a practice that we wish more producers adopted. It gives the wine a sense of balance while retaining all those fresh characteristics that Sauv Blanc is so famous for. In classic Margrain style this is a dry expression of Martinborough Sauvignon that bursts with tropical fruits and that underlying tomato leaf character that brings the complexity and palate interest that so many Sauv Blancs lack. Fresh and zingy in its youth, this wine will further harmonise over the coming two years - softening those acids out on the finish. All class.
The winery writes "The palate springs forth with hackles raised and will have you shivering with anticipation. It presents as beautifully and quite simply dry, while the attentive acidity imparts a tingly feel to the spine. Tinned pineapple, fresh persimmon and fragrant bergamot swirl around in this fast-walking, quick-talking wine while a slightly furry carborundum-like structure anchors it with pith-cutting freshness. Mid palate there are glimpses of a thickened, oily quality, some lush chunks of quava, wedges of grapefruit and an interesting spicy note, perhaps star anise? Finally however, the wine finishes as clean as a newly sanitised bench press and will leave you craving another sip."
