95 POINTS | Cameron Douglas MS
TOM is the flagship of the Church Road winery in Hawkes Bay. Vinted as a tribute to legendary vintner Tom McDonald, Tom is multidimensional blend that simultaneously shows great depth of dark, brooding flavours and beguiling, lifted aromatics. Beautifully balanced cabernet sauvignon and merlot provide a rounded, seamless feel across the palate and a sense of subtle, lithe power without excessive heaviness. It is very Bordeaux like and will be very long lived.
Cameron Douglas MS writes "Merlot for this wine comes off the Gimblett site contributing 81% to the blend, the remainder of 19% from the Redstone Vineyard forming part of the Bridga Pa Triangle. On the nose and palate the merlot brings a fleshy, plush and vivid dark plum core. The Cabernet not only provides backbone and power it delivers flavours of black fruits, roasted bell-pepper and with a bold structure of French oak underpinning this wine (62% new) the dark spices and coco, sweet tobacco and woody muscle are hard to miss. Tannins are bold and ripe, acidity brings freshness and purity. A totally authentic wine with a lengthy and memorable finish."
The winery writes "Brooding, darkly fruited and earthy, this is a full bodied wine, with a plush richness. The weight and density is reigned in by gentle acidity and an exceptionally fine grained, ripe tannin structure that lends definition and length to the palate."
